Press briefing of Asian and African parliamentarians at the Bangkok Climate Week

A press briefing was held by Asian and African parliamentarians who presented a united call for a fossil fuel phase-out and a rapid, just transition to renewable energy. The event highlighted the urgent need for legislative action to protect communities, accelerate energy access, and ensure justice for the most vulnerable.

Asia and Africa are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, already experiencing severe impacts such as extreme heat, floods, droughts and food insecurity. Despite this, fossil fuel expansion continues, threatening people’s lives, ecosystems and economies. Parliamentarians from both regions are stepping forward to demand accountability, legislative action and people-centered solutions that prioritize renewable energy.

This event took place during Bangkok Climate Week, a milestone moment ahead of COP30 in Belém, where Global South voices aimed to shape the international climate agenda. Speakers included parliamentarians from Asia and Africa.

Key messages:

  • Phasing out fossil fuels is essential to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
  • Renewable energy is viable, affordable, and can deliver justice if deployed equitably.
  • A just transition must protect workers, communities, and vulnerable populations.
  • Parliamentarians play a crucial role in shaping laws, ensuring accountability, and safeguarding rights.
